Moonlight and Me: Discovering the Moon’s Secrets
Chapter 5: The Magic of the Moon
Have you ever felt calm when you look at the Moon? Or excited when she’s full and bright, like she’s glowing just for you? That’s not just your imagination. The Moon has a way of making people feel things — peaceful, excited, full of dreams.
For thousands of years, people have celebrated her light and phases. They’ve danced, made wishes, created simple rituals and written poems and stories - a bit like my book here - all inspired by my love of the Moon and the joy of sharing that love with my daughter Grace.
New Moon — The Time to Begin
The New Moon is invisible — hiding in the dark sky. It’s a time of quiet beginnings and new dreams. When the sky is empty, it’s like a blank page waiting for your story.
People say the New Moon is a time to set intentions — simple wishes or goals that you’d like to grow, just like seeds planted in soil. Intentions aren’t magic commands. They are hopes you hold close, and you can take small actions to help them come true.
Activity - The New Moon Manifesting Journal
Find a quiet spot and your notebook.
Write down 2–3 things you’d like to bring into your life this month — kindness, fun, laughter, courage, creativity, calm, chocolate.
Next to each, write one small thing you can do to help them grow.
Close your eyes and imagine the Moon’s invisible light surrounding your words, helping them take root.
You’ve just made your first Moon intention!
This is a bit like the wish jar we did earlier, but there’s more focus within this activity.
Waxing Moon — Growing Your Dreams
As the Moon grows brighter, it’s time to take steps toward your goals. Each night she adds more light — and so can you.
Think of this phase as a reminder to take action. Did you wish for more creativity? Try a new craft. Did you wish for courage? Take one brave step this week. The Moon’s growing glow can remind you to keep moving, even in small ways.
Activity - Make Your Own Dream Board
Sometimes it helps to have pictures of the things we dream about. I love making dream boards to help my wishes start to come true — and they’re so much fun to make! Who doesn’t love cutting, sticking, and adding lots of sparkly glitter?
You’ll need a big piece of card and some old magazines. Look through the magazines and cut out pictures or words that show your dreams — things you’d love to do, have, or be one day.
Glue them onto your card however you like. You can fill the whole board with pictures and words!
When you’re done, make it sparkle like the Moon by adding some glitter or using a glitter glue pen.
Let it dry, then put your dream board somewhere you’ll see it every day.
As time goes by, look at it and see if any of your dreams start to come true! Sometimes your dreams might change, and that’s okay — you can always make a new board.
Not every dream happens right away, but you might be surprised by how many do! I once made a dream board and thought some of my dreams were impossible — but after two years, most of them came true!
Full Moon — Celebration, Clarity, and Charging Energy
When the Moon is full, she’s at her brightest — shining with energy and joy. It’s the perfect time to celebrate what’s going well and to let go of anything you no longer need.
People all around the world celebrate the Moon in different ways. Some light candles, sit quietly, or just stand outside under her silver light and say thank you. Others like to let the Moon shine on crystals, water, or special objects — like a favorite toy or a little treasure — believing they can soak up her bright, magical energy.
You could even pretend the Moon is giving your favorite things a little Moon-hug, filling them with sparkle and magic!
Activity - Make a Full Moon Potion Spray
You can make your own Moon-charged room spray — a bottle of Moonlight magic!
You’ll need:
A small glass jar or bowl
Clean water (filtered or rainwater if possible)
A few flower petals (like lavender, rose, or chamomile)
A drop or two of safe essential oil (optional, always with adult help)
A few crystals (such as clear quartz, amethyst, or rose quartz — never metal or sharp stones)
Place your ingredients in the jar or bowl.
Set it outside under the Full Moon (or by a window where Moonlight shines) - make sure it won’t get knocked over or is anywhere pets may get at it.
As you place it down, take a deep breath and whisper something kind:
“May this Moonlight fill my home with peace and joy.”
“May this Moonlight help bring me calm”
In the morning, pour the water into a small spray bottle (remove crystals first).
Use it to mist your room — think of it as Moonlight in a bottle!
Note: Always make sure your ingredients are safe to handle — no drinking, just spraying and enjoying the scent and sparkle. Always ask for an adult’s help.
Waning Moon — Letting Go and Resting
As the Moon fades, it’s time to relax and release. This is when you can tidy your room - (yes Grace tidy your room… please!), clear your space, or write down worries and let them go.
Some people use their Moon potion spray to refresh their space — letting go of old energy and making room for something new.
The Moon reminds us: we don’t always have to shine at our brightest. Rest is part of the rhythm too and that is ok - in fact it is more than ok, I do really enjoy a lay in on a Sunday morning!
Moonlight and Crystals
Crystals — and yes, when I say crystals, I mean minerals too. (I know, I know — there’s a difference, but that’s when it starts to get all sciency stuff again. If you really want the facts, grab a geology book — it’ll tell you everything!)
Where was I? Oh yes — crystals! They’re stones that have formed in all sorts of amazing ways here on Earth… and sometimes even from space!
Each crystal has its own sparkle, shape, and pattern — like tiny, frozen pieces of starlight. I love them all. They come in every colour you can imagine, and each one tells a story about the Earth.
Take fulgurite, for example — it’s a tube shaped crystal formed when lightning strikes sand. (Yes, lightning! How cool is that?!) Then there’s obsidian, a shiny, glass like rock made from volcanoes. And moldavite, a green gem that was created when a meteorite hit the Earth.
One of my tiniest treasures — and one of my favourites — is Libyan Desert Glass. It’s rarer than gold and thought to have formed when a meteorite blasted into the Libyan desert, melting sand into golden glass. I love holding it and imagining how it came to be.
Of course, there are all sorts of other treasures too — like fossils, which hold stories from long, long ago. Every stone is a little piece of Earth’s memory… and the Moon, watching from above, has seen it all happen.
Some people say magic isn’t real, but I think they’re a little silly — how can you look at all the amazing things in the world and not call it magic?! Sure, there’s some sciency stuff behind it, but honestly, the more I learn, the more I think science is just magic with a fancy name.
Some people like to “charge” their crystals under the full Moon. They leave them in her bright, silvery light so they can rest, sparkle, and soak up a little of the Moon’s magic.
Activity - Moonlight Charging
Choose a few favourite crystals
Rinse them gently in clean water, then dry them - have an adult help you to ensure the crystals are ok with water - selenite for example shouldn’t be placed in water.
Place them on a windowsill or outside where the Moon can see them.
In the morning, thank the Moon and hold each crystal for a moment — notice how cool and calm they feel.
This little ritual helps you slow down and feel connected to nature, even the colours of the crystals can help enhance mood - blues are often calming, pinks full of love and yellows bring joy and playfulness — and that’s real magic.
Activity - Reflection: Living by the Moon
The Moon’s cycle — new, growing, full, fading — can guide you through your own life cycles and phases. Write in your Moon journal anything you notice about how you feel as the Moon changes.
Do you feel more creative when she’s bright? More thoughtful when she’s dark?
There’s no right or wrong.
Try this gentle mantra when you look up at the night sky:
“As the Moon changes, I change too. I grow, I shine, I rest, I renew.”
And remember — the real magic isn’t in the Moonlight or crystals or water. It’s in you — your imagination, your kindness and your connection to the world around you.
