If you've read my blog you'll know how much the cold water dipping has helped me cope with pain and the mental strain of living with stage 4 cancer. I am a nervous bobber though and I would like to change that. I'd love to build up to feeling more confident in open water.

It's things like rip currents and not knowing the depths of a place - some you can walk out for ages and it'll be only up to your knees, others have sudden drop offs. And in the rivers it's the swoosh and fear of getting swooshed away! It's a healthy fear to have, but I'd like to be a bit braver and actually swim not just bob! In fact I would really like to one day manage the swim to Burgh Island at Bigbury, so there's my challenge!

I have struggled to keep up a regular swim practice, the first course I did was wonderful and people still meet up each week, but it is an hour and a half from me and mostly I can’t manage that kind of drive, especially when on chemo. This course is a bit closer.

I can't wait to get back into a weekly swimming habit and hopefully grow my confidence in a safe supported environment, and maybe actually swim a bit rather than bob!

The First Day

On arrival I was met by the lovely Erin and Mark, and after initial introductions and chat (interesting why these groups are always made up of significantly more women than men) we made our way to the beach. I love Saunton Sands, it's one of my favourite beaches. Grace says it's her second favourite beach, her favourite being Exmouth. When she hears the cafe does lemon and sugar pancakes it may become her new favourite!

We had the safety talk and some good information about the benefits of cold water. I always love the fact that after only 2 minutes of immersion you have received all the benefits the cold water offers, any time spent in after that is purely for the joy of it.

The obligatory warm-up star jumps were performed to the best of our ability and then we were off to get cold and wet! I loved it.

I didn’t hesitate, but may have squealed… I even dunked my head under a couple of times, I normally bottle out of that when it’s really cold. but it felt good.

I had such a bad fibromyalgia day yesterday, I was dosed up on painkillers all day. This morning I felt a bit better but had some pain, I made the decision not to take any pain relief and see what the cold water did. Despite a busy day, as of 9pm, still no painkillers. The effect the water has on my body is wonderful, it eases the pain sensations changing them into something better. It also lifts my mental wellbeing. I’ve been feeling low and incredibly stressed lately waiting for scan results. Living life scan to scan is taking its toll in a way that’s hard to put into words. Sometimes, the uncertainty is so heavy that my mind tells me it would be easier to just have bad news to deal with, rather than this constant cycle of rebuilding hope only to fear losing it all again. Of course it wouldn't, but the mind takes you to strange dark places at times of stress.

​I’m terrified of not making it to our trip to Lapland in December, but I’m choosing to keep booking these adventures with Grace. I will never give up.

The water lifted me, being with others also enjoying it lifted me. It’s always special to share a dip with people who get it and share the emotions the water can bring - the highs and the lows! There's alot that can be freed with the waves. I was tearful at one point, a release of the last week perhaps, then laughter and joy took over. Needless to say I can’t wait for next weeks session - the added bonus being Tigger is on the way home!

It has great rocks to sit on, a shallow entrance into the river and you can swim into the current but not go anywhere, it's like a swimming treadmill!

My friend Janine joined me & Grace and she'd very kindly prepared a picnic which I happily devoured after my swim. Grace had fun with her bubbles whilst I prepared to get cold.

The water temperature was about 8.5 degrees. I stepped in carefully, this is when I am so grateful for my water shoes. I wish I'd had some as a kid, no hurty stones to bother my feet! The Brighton Water Shoes have brilliant soles on them too, I don't feel a thing. They also help take away the initial cold on my feet which makes it a bit easier to get in. I normally wear gloves which help with that too, but forgot to put them on!

I also wore my wolly hat, unbeknown to me my earphones were in the hat too, so they had a swim with me 🤣 Thank goodness they didn't get wet! You may wonder why my earphones were in my hat… I just spent 2 nights sleeping in my friend's camper van and used my hat to put my phone, charger and earphones in so I didn’t loose them in the bed. How I didn't notice they were on my head whilst swimming I have no idea 🙃

Grace put her hand in the water and screeched “Mummy! It's freezing!” We discussed water temperature and agreed it was cold, but not quite freezing - wait until I take her to Lapland! I am hoping I can try a swim there… that really will be freezing!

I managed to get myself in the water and enjoy the swim. I had to do the usual deep breaths as I got in fully and then it felt so nice, especially on my shoulders which weren't too happy after their 2 nights squished in the van! Grace put on her water shoes, dipped her feet in very briefly, then changed her mind and went back to her bubbles.

It was stunning watching the sun sparkling on the water as it flowed towards me, over the shallower rocks. The trees are a fresh new green as their buds and leaves grow. Bluebells were scattered around and a lonesome duck swam further up river. We saw tiny fish too.

I could feel my body calming, responding to the water.

Then, sadly, it was time to get out. I wanted to stay longer but worry about pushing it too far. I need to get a waterproof watch so I can time myself and build up my time in the water safely. When I got out it didn't take long to warm up, so I could probably have stayed in a bit longer.

I got changed and enjoyed a hot chocolate to warm up.

We then headed to Dartmeet. Grace loves jumping around the rocks there. She also loved her new water shoes too, she changed into them again as she said they were perfect for jumping from rock to rock and giving her grip.

I love going to Dartmeet with Grace. My parents took me and my brother there during the holidays and we would have so much fun leaping from rock to rock. It fills my heart seeing her enjoy this special place in the same way.

One of the reasons we went to Dartmoor was to find some Dartmoor ponies and foals, other than a couple of adult ponies by the roadside we saw none! It does mean we will have to go back again very soon!

The river sits in a valley just below the village, a place that feels suspended in another time. Around 80 people live here year-round, though that number can triple during holidays as families return, just as we did this Easter. My brother’s lovely Spanish wife has family here, and we were lucky enough to join them this Easter holiday.

Monsagro is known for its fossil trail. Many of the houses are built from local mountain stone, and if you look closely, you can spot fossils embedded within the walls.

In summer, children run freely through the streets until midnight while adults gather in small groups around the town square. Most residents tend plots of land where they grow fruit and vegetables, often enough to sustain them throughout the year. There’s even a shared watering system with set time slots when the channels are blocked to redirect water, you need to be there for your turn, or you miss out!

Fresh mountain spring water flows from fountains scattered throughout the village and along the surrounding roads.

There’s no shop in the village, though you can pick up a Monsagro T-shirt or hat from the fossil museum gift shop, just be sure to check the opening times!

On this visit I kept hearing the soft jingling of bells from sheep and a donkey as they wander nearby. One evening, we saw a man carrying two newborn lambs under his arms, followed closely by their bleating mother. It was cold and wet, so I imagine they were being taken somewhere warmer for the night.

The village itself is made up of cobbled streets and tightly clustered houses, likely designed to create shade from the sun. Wooden seats and stools are dotted around, some even built into the houses. Washing hangs from balconies, people sweep the streets, pick up litter as they go, and clearly take pride in their surroundings. There’s a local Facebook group, though only two people can post in it—any issues are sent to them, and they decide what to share. It’s surprisingly efficient; within minutes of someone losing their keys, word spreads and a post appears!

Back to the river. It’s about a 10-minute gentle walk down, though the return journey is steeper and takes a little longer. Thankfully, there are benches along the way to rest.

Over Easter, the river was incredibly quiet. On my second swim, I didn’t see another person.

As I walk down the winding path, birdsong fills the air. I open the Merlin app to try and identify them. Around me, the trees are in full blossom, and sunlight filters through the branches. Flowers in oranges, pinks, yellows and purples brighten the path. Heather is in bloom. Some trees are bursting with fresh green leaves, while others are still waking from winter. Many are covered in lichen. A lizard darts past, so quick it’s almost gone before I notice it.

I look up and see the semi-circle walls where, each year, wheat threshing takes place, with a donkey at the centre of it all. Another Monsagro tradition being kept alive. There is a real pride for the area within the residents of the village, and rightly so.

Soon, I begin to hear the sound of rushing water. I’m not entirely sure how swimmable it will be, but I’m hopeful. In the distance, sunlight catches a yellow leaved tree among deeper greens, and I spot a wide patch of grass glowing among the woodland. It feels inviting, almost magical, like something from The Faraway Tree. It’s out of reach, though, and its mystery remains intact - probably for the best, I would only be disappointed if I got there and there was no tree to climb to another land!

I pause by a dead tree. It may be dead, but it still holds life. Inside its hollow trunk sits a small pot. I wonder why. A decoration? A memory? A quiet tribute? I’ll probably never know.

On I go, listening to the birds, smiling to myself.

When I reach the bridge, the view opens up, it’s clear, bright, and peaceful. Sunlight dapples the water through the trees. Pale rocks are streaked with vivid green moss, and a fish suddenly jumps, breaking the stillness with a splash.

At the water’s edge, I sit for a moment beside the rushing current. The sound fills everything. I dip my hand in and it’s cold. The rocks are white, grey and bright green, there's incredible colours and textures all around me.

Perfect.

The river forms a deep pool here, ideal for swimming, with shallower sections on either side which I am very happy about as I feel safe and know I will not get whisked off down the mountain. In summer, they dam the area to maintain the depth which I think is wonderful.

I step carefully from the rock, splash water over myself to adjust, and then commit.

I’m swimming.

The cold takes my breath for a moment, but it quickly settles. Soon, I’m moving calmly through the water, swimming back and forth, completely immersed in the place. It is cold but fortunately it is a hot day and so when I get out I move to the sun to change and warm up. I sit by the quiet part of the river. I love how the noise of the rushing water takes all my senses away, I also love the peaceful still water where everything is quiet but for the sounds of nature.

I managed two swims in the river, one alone and peaceful and one with my family watching on who clearly all thought I was mad! The kids loved playing by the water though, it was such a joy to see.

It felt a little breezy when we arrived, and I must admit I didn’t immediately feel the urge to get changed and jump into the sea! There’s a slope down to the shoreline, we walked across the pebbles and it wasn’t until we reached the top of the slope that we could properly see how rough the water was. We stood watching the waves crash, the sea looking a little brown close to the shoreline as the waves shook everything up. I quickly decided I wouldn’t be getting in. I’m not experienced enough to handle those kinds of waves. It only takes one to knock you off your feet and pull you out, and from there… who knows?!

I have a deep respect for the sea, maybe even a healthy fear. I love it, but I won’t put myself at unnecessary risk. If I were a stronger, more experienced sea swimmer, I might have given it a go, but that’s not me (yet!). Thankfully, there’s a river right by the sauna at Branscombe, along with cold showers, so I didn’t miss out on the cold-water experience.

The sauna itself was wonderful, as were the river and the showers. Stepping into the cold took my breath away, I could feel my body tense and my breathing shorten. I focused on slowing it down, taking deep breaths, and before long I was settled and relaxed. I love that transition: cold, cold, cold… then ahhhhh. I looked across the Jurassic coastline and the red cliffs that step out, I wonder what secrets those cliffs still hold. It started to rain, when you are wet already a bit of rain doesn’t really matter, in fact I really like being in the water when it’s raining, there’s something really refreshing about. We normally cover ourselves up to keep dry and I enjoy feeling the elements on my skin for a change.

I only stayed in the river for a few minutes at a time, aware shorter dips when hitting the sauna after are better; it can be dangerous to get really cold and then warm up too quickly. I headed back into the sauna to warm up. I think I managed three or four times like this, rinsing off under the cold showers before getting back in the sauna each time - a second hit of cold just to keep topped up!

Your support truly means more than you know to me and my daughter, we are currently trying to save for a memory making adventure to Lapland in December.

I did the usual Surfers Against Sewage app check to make sure there had been no recent spills. Exmouth is notoriously bad for it, and of course I worry about the infection risk.

I was very lucky to get a lift with a couple of the lovely COWS swim group ladies, which helped with my fatigue levels. When I got home after the swim I thought I’d have a quick power nap, I didn’t wake for two hours!

When we arrived at the beach, it immediately became apparent that it was a tad windy. Not ideal conditions for getting into swimwear, or getting dressed again afterwards, but at least the sun was shining.

To my surprise and joy, smudge sticks and a candle appeared from one of the bags. We took the time to light the candle and smudge each other with sage. As you can imagine, lighting the candle wasn’t the easiest in the wind, but we managed to create a decent windbreak with our bags and dry robes.

I hadn’t used smudge for a long time, and as the scent wafted towards me, a sense of calm and remembrance settled in. I used to smudge daily when I was seeing reiki and meditation clients, a practice I’ve let slip. In fact, I’d only been saying a day or two ago that it was time for a spring smudge of the house. The universe seemed to agree. I use infused room sprays daily, but there is nothing quite like a good smudge.

The most beautiful rainbow appeared as we smudged. It felt full of meaning and seemed to land right in the sea. I wasn’t quite brave enough to dive in and search for the pot of gold sadly.

We moved our things nearer the wall to give us some shelter from the wind when we returned, a very sensible decision as it turned out. As we made our way down the beach, I kid you not, bagpipes began to play and a crow cawed us along.

Dry robes abandoned on the beach, with a quick mutter to the passing dogs not to pee on them, as has happened before, and we headed into the sea.

It was cold.

It took my breath away. I paused for some deep breathing, splashed water up my arms, and then I was in. These colder swims are never quite as blissful as the summer ones. There’s no urge to lie back and drift, it’s more a case of survival! That said, despite the bracing temperature, my whole body thanked me for it. It’s hard to explain the instant relief to my nervous system as I immerse myself.

I took a moment to look around, to feel the sea, watch the waves hitting the sandbanks further along, notice the clouds, and the curve of rain falling in a mini, localised shower down the shore.

I stayed in for about ten minutes. I’ll never forget being told that when it’s properly cold and you start to feel okay, that’s your cue to get out. The other two were more hardcore than me, so I left them to it and went to retrieve my thankfully dog-pee-free dry robe, heading back up the beach to the sound of bagpipes.

The wall provided the perfect windbreak, and I took a moment to sit on my towel and feel the sun on my face. I also lingered a bit, as it seemed the whole of Exmouth was out for the Parkrun and no one needed an accidental flash while I was getting changed!

I felt quite pleased with myself, I'd managed to bring three towels: one for drying, one to sit on, and one to brush sand off. My dry robe stayed dry to keep me warm, I remembered a plastic bag for the sandy things, and I even had my heated gilet. I might finally have nailed this part… though I’m sure next time I’ll forget something crucial.

The others soon joined me, and once we were all dressed, a flask of hot chocolate, spray cream, and hot cross bun loaf appeared—absolute bliss. Though we could have done without the sandy sprinkles the wind insisted on adding.

All in all, a wonderful start to the day, and I’m full of gratitude for kind, friendly people and the sea.

I am off to Spain next week and very much hoping to have a dip in the River there, this has set me up well for it.

As I step into the water

stillness awaits
floating at ease

Each sea dip mirrors the waves of my emotion

Some days they crash without warning

catching me unawares

knocking me from my feet

I hear nothing but thunder

I shout, I scream into the waves

until the roar turns into laughter

into whoops of joy

Other days they lap gently

they are there

I feel them

the motion moves me in whatever way is needed

not overwhelming, nor consuming

I let the flow carry me

I might smile

A tear might gently fall

And some days there are no waves at all

the sea is still

so still

calm

There is peace in the silence

floating, drifting in the quiet

the peace fills my whole body

I am connected

I am one

I have always been one

Then it was time to wander down the road to meet my lift. I’d arranged to meet at the bottom of the hill, unsure how icy it might be. I opened the door to a covering of glistening, fine snow and the most beautiful silvery full moon.

Wow.

I gingerly made my way down the hill, hoping I wouldn’t end up slipping onto my backside. Thankfully it was more crunchy snow than ice, and I took great joy in making the very first footprints of the day.

Numerous times I thought, I am mad. Heading out on one of the coldest mornings to swim in the sea. Getting a lift with someone I’d never met before (though known by friends). Driving 40 minutes just to get into very cold water…

Perfect timing though – I reached the bottom of the hill just as my lift arrived. At least, I hoped it was my lift and not some other random person waiting there! I’ve had a few of these blind swim-date lifts now. People really are so kind in the local swim group.

Because of fatigue from chemo, it isn’t always sensible for me to drive home after a swim – I’m often utterly exhausted, and did sleep most of the afternoon after this one – so I’m incredibly grateful for the kindness of strangers. Obviously, everyone is known to others, so there’s no stranger danger 🤣 but it’s still always a bit odd stepping into a car with someone you’ve never met before. That said, we’re always there for the same reason: a love of swimming in seas and rivers. Every lift so far has been a joy.

The roads were well gritted, no issues with ice, and soon we arrived in Exmouth, meeting two others from the group just as the sun began to rise. To one side, the sunrise. To the other, the full moon slowly setting.

We stepped onto the beach and noticed the sand was covered in sparkling frost.

Time to get in.

The water temperature: 8.5°C. One of my coldest swims, beaten only by an 8 degree Coniston Lake dip towards the end of 2024 – and without doubt this was one of my most spectacular. I was only in for about five minutes, but wow… what a swim. Watching the sun rise, then turning to see the full moon. Pain gone. Nothing else in my mind – just me, the water, sky and breathing.

I had a little swim, almost in disbelief at where I found myself, with a huge smile on my face.

The sea was flat and calm. Absolute perfection.

Getting out was… brisk. My toes in particular were very aware of the cold, and my fingers weren’t doing a great job of zipping up my dry robe. I’m fairly sure I flashed a boob at one point 😅 Getting dressed afterwards is always the worst part – especially on sand. I persevered, and eventually I was wrapped up in a woolly hat, jumper, heated gilet, thermal socks, and hands clasped tightly around my hot chocolate.

Amazingly, I wasn’t too shivery. I think I got out at just the right time.

We drove home with happy smiles all round. What a blissful start to the day.

Absolutely worth the early wake-up call!

A Dream of Blue
Blue is where I return to myself, where I am free.

It is the colour of the sea that taught me how to breathe again.

The blue that steals my breath when I enter, and then slowly gives it back, steadier than before.

The blue that eases the pain.

The blue where friendships are gained.

I love the sea in all its moods. Some days the waves arrive with force, relentless and loud, and I wade in knowing there is no room for anything else. The noise wipes my mind clean. There are no worries in those moments, no past or future — just water, breath, body, now. Other days, the sea is gentle. Blue water beneath a blue sky, and I float in it, weightless, held. Peace finds me there.

Blue has also brought me people. A circle of women, drawn together by cold water and courage, by early mornings and shared knowing smiles. We arrive wrapped in towels and stories, and leave lighter.

Groups all over the UK connect with each other, always welcoming when holidaying and in need a swim buddy. Special connections, some brief some long term friends, brought together by the blue.

The sea does not care who we are, we are all equal within its embrace.

Blue has pulled many into a quiet sisterhood — one that steadies, strengthens, and reminds us that we are not alone.

My first steps into cold water were taken with a different kind of group — people living with, and recovering from, cancer. We entered the sea together, each carrying invisible histories, scars, and strength. There was a deep, unspoken understanding between us. No explanations needed. We supported one another into the water, knowing exactly what it meant to stand there, vulnerable and brave at once. That blue held us and continues to bring us together.

The sea teaches me again and again that strength and softness can co exist.

That surrender is not weakness.

That immersion can be healing.

My dream of blue is simple. To keep swimming. To keep showing up — even when it’s cold, even when it’s hard. To keep connecting — to the water, to the women beside me, to myself.

Blue is not just a colour to me now.

It is a promise.

It is my saving.

The sea was around 12 degrees, but it didn’t feel too shocking with the air about the same temperature and I was far too focussed on the waves as opposed to the cold!

It was especially lovely seeing two people from my own group and having a proper catch up. I don’t often make the regular swims, usually too tired on a Thursday after Tuesday chemo, but I was determined not to miss this one. And I’m so glad I did.

A beautiful, salty, laughter filled reminder of community, resilience, and joy. I really needed it after the last few days, I have been in quite a slump and this really lifted me!

I have a sauna booked at Suri Saunas, Clevedon Marine Lakes on Saturday, I can't wait to get in the water again. It is incredible the benefit this cold water malarkey has on me mentally and physically. It's such a shame it is harder to find clean water to swim in in the winter, with the weekly chemo I have to be extra cautious of infection risks and with the sewage overspill and run down from fields winter swimming can prove tricky!

I need it though so I will keep trying!! It's becoming really noticeable that if I dont get my cold water swim and/or horse fix my mental health drastically suffers! It's my place to let it all go, ground and be in the moment surrounded by nature. Withdrawal symptoms definitely happen when I don't get my fix! Maybe I need to move closer to the sea!

Two friends joined me for this adventure: Rachel, who I’ve known since the age of 11, we “grew up” at the same riding stables. We’ve shared many horse adventures over our long friendship and love to reminisce about the childhood ones and how brave we were back then! Also joining us was Natalie, a friend I met around 25 years ago through our mutual passion for Dartmoor Hill Ponies; together, we ran the Dartmoor Pony Training Centre, dedicating years to rescuing, handling, and rehoming feral ponies.

We stayed at a campsite near Penzance and spent the evening before the ride sharing special horse & pony stories and remembering many of those fabulous souls that shaped our lives - so many treasured memories.

I don’t think any of us enjoyed a good sleep in the tent (is there such a thing - please let me know if there is and how you manage it!?) In the morning we uncrumpled our aching bodies, rolled out of the tent and managed to make a coffee before setting off full of excitement (and maybe a bit of trepidation for Rachel who doesn’t like cold water) about what the morning would bring.

With all the horse adventures I undertake I feel anxious about horse welfare and what I will find upon arrival. I try to research beforehand, but ultimately, the true situation only becomes clear once I arrive and see it firsthand. I am delighted to say I had no qualms with what we experienced at Cornwall Swimming Horses!

Upon arriving at the yard, we were welcomed by Chris, whose parrot Kiki was happily perched on his shoulder. We also met his partner Anna, along with Maz and a lad who helps out, and I am very sorry as I never got his name. All of them were joining us as 121 one leads for the ride. Additionally, there was another rider accompanying us, making a group of four heading toward the sea.

We were guided to the “luxury changing room”, which was stocked with wetsuits for all sizes. In reality, it's a stable with rubber mats, impeccably clean—definitely my kind of luxury on a yard!

Kitted out with wetsuits and hats, we were introduced to our horses in the school and guided to establish a connection with them. My horse was Juju, a sweet piebald mare. Anna, my lead for the ride, shared insights about horse energy, how our own energy influences them, and demonstrated leading techniques. She explained how her breathing and positioning during walking and stopping affect Juju, adjusting her energy accordingly. I was then given the lead rope to practice myself, with each rider being guided in the same manner by their lead. I appreciated the thoughtful introduction, which reflected a deep understanding of the horses’ needs. It always surprises me how many places overlook the importance of taking time to get to know your horse first, we expect them to carry strangers, it is surely polite & respectful to at least take a few minutes to say hello and introduce ourselves, and our energy, first!

It was wonderful to see all the horses calm and relaxed and each displaying their individual personality.

After introductions, it was time to get on, but there was no saddle! Since my cancer diagnosis, I've been a bit cautious about my balance while riding, knowing I need to improve it and I’m hoping to practice canter schooling soon. I love the idea of riding bareback but was unsure how wobbly I might feel, though Anna reassured me that staying relaxed makes it easier and showed me how to position myself for a more secure seat. She then led Juju to the mounting block, and I climbed aboard. After a few steps, I quickly settled into the bareback rhythm.

We began our trip toward the sea, traveling along a lane that opened into a field filled with vibrant agapanthus, offering the most spectacular view of the ocean and across to St Michael’s Mount. From there, we continued onto the main road.

I am continually amazed by how adaptable horses are. During our ride to the beach, we encountered helicopters, a level crossing, a bridge over the A30, road works, and busy traffic—all without any fuss from the horses. Our leads were by each of our horse’s heads at all times. We dismounted to cross the A30, led the horses across, and then used a handy grit box to remount effortlessly. We went over the level crossing having just missed the train, not that the horses would have been bothered, and then we were on the golden sands of the beach.

That as a bareback ride in itself was pretty epic, and we hadn’t even made it into the sea!

We dismounted once more, and Chris outlined our plans for the next hour, which involved riding into the sea, trotting through it, swimming in the water with the horses, and being pulled along from behind while they trotted; we were also warned that we would have to fall off at the end!

We were instructed to enter the sea and acclimatise, luckily I love cold water swimming so I was comfortable getting in and soon found myself happily floating. Anna guided Juju in. I was supposed to bounce in the water and get back on, I couldn’t quite make it so Anna helped with a bit of a leg up, at one point I wondered if I would end up flying right over and falling head first into the sea the other side - I didn’t!

Anna led Juju in a circle around her through the water, like lunging. I gradually became accustomed to the sensation of the sea nudging my legs out of their usual position and settled into the movement. We strolled along the shoreline, splashing as we went. I stilled myself for a moment to soak it all in —the shimmering sea and the prominent St Michael’s Mount in the background. Turning to walk the other way, I felt tears welling up as the emotion of the experience overwhelmed me. I was here, sharing another extraordinary moment with these wonderful beings and my beautiful friends - feeling grateful to be alive.

We then had the opportunity to trot, we had been assured it would be very different from a trot on land —at least if I fell, it would be into the soft sea! The horses sensed what was ahead and without hesitation started trotting through the waves, their knees lifted high, splashing all around. It felt somewhat like riding a piaffe! I couldn’t help but grin and laugh throughout, overwhelmed by the incredible sensation and sound of the water.

After a few trots back and forth, it was time for the swim. Everything was explained to us about how it would work. There were four of us participating, and we would go out in pairs and would be led at all times. We were instructed to hold onto the neck strap or mane, making sure not to interfere with the horse's head - he added one of the horses preferred if you held on to the mane rather than the strap, I loved that there was such an awareness of their comfort. Chris then explained that as the water got deeper, we would stretch out across the horses' backs and be pulled along while floating on them. I couldn't help but wonder how this experience would be for the horses.

Throughout the ride I chatted with Anna and Chris, I learned about the organic growth of Cornwall Swimming Horses, which Chris described as having "just happened" over time without any formal plans. Chris is a respected local horse trainer known for helping horses that others struggle with. Anna shared that most horses adapt well to sea swimming, although a few prefer staying on the sand, which is perfectly fine—if they’re not comfortable, they won’t be forced into it. With proper introductions and training, most horses seem to embrace the experience.

Anna guided Juju further out into the sea, the water deepened and pushed my legs upward, then she instructed me to lie across Juju’s back; suddenly, we were swimming. I held on to the neckstrap, it felt like I was floating above her rather than on her and being pulled along. The power was just incredible, these horses are fit.

A wakeboard zoomed past, Juju didn’t care. Chris said they had swum up to paddleboarders on occasion!

We turned and swam back toward the shore, I was surprised at how far out to sea we had ventured. While the swim wasn't completely effortless for Juju, I never once doubted she was having difficulty. As we approached a depth where she could touch the bottom, I pulled myself back on board. I could feel the difference as her hooves met land and instinctively knew when to do this, though of course Anna was there ensuring Juju was not interfered with too soon.

I watched Natalie and Rachel swimming, their faces filled with awe and wonder as they enjoyed themselves.

Having experienced the swim we were then going to try being pulled along from behind at a trot. Each lead was behind their horse in this way when we had trotted earlier, and now they would ride whilst we got pulled along. I had slight trepidation about Juju deciding to poo mid trot with my head so close to her rear end in the sea, but soon let that thought dissipate (noting to keep my mouth shut at all times) and was ready to try!

We held on to their tails, it was explained how to do this in a way that was safe for the horses, and then off we went. The water was deep enough that as they trotted we were pulled along on top of the sea, body surfing the waves! The sheer force was incredible, and the sensation - speed and the rush of the water - was truly indescribable - you’ll just have to try it for yourselves!

Finally it was time to fall off. Chris had specifically said we were not to dismount in the sea we had to fall off, because when else would we get the chance to willingly fall off and land safely! I embraced the opportunity and flung myself off Juju who was not perturbed by my sudden departure in the slightest. Natalie followed suit, but Rachel was less willing and slid into the sea….. so she had to get back on again and do it properly! Don’t worry, she was fine. In fact after Rachel’s experience she wrote to them and said: “What I experienced, I can honestly say has shaped my future life and experience with water. You took the time to explain everything and in a way that made even the most nervous, sea weed phobic person feel that ultimately I may be ok. At the end of the ride I was so much more than “ok”! At one point I was getting mouthfuls of sea water because I couldn’t stop smiling.”

Having fallen off we led the horses back to the beach where they were given time to enjoy a snack and a bit of a rest. We then remounted and rode the route back to the yard. I think the worst part was trying to get the wetsuits off at the end, why do they have to be so difficult to peel yourself out of?!

I have never experienced anything quite like this before, I am almost speechless!

From the moment we arrived on the yard Chris, Anna, Maz and the team made us feel welcome. They were lighthearted, chatty and fun, confident in their handling of the horses who were managed with calm and obvious love, they exuded knowledge and we all felt at ease, safe and most importantly that the horses’ wellbeing was considered every step of the way.

Kynance Cove, Cornwall

The adventure began at Kynance Cove with my friend Rachel. The water looked turquoise and inviting, framed by dramatic cliffs and rock formations, but once we got in, it wasn't quite so calm! At times it felt like being inside a washing machine — waves crashing from three directions after bouncing off the rocks. We had to laugh at ourselves, bobbing around, trying to find a rhythm while the sea had other plans. There was something thrilling about it though — that mix of beauty and chaos, the noise and the waves crashing over me is all that exists in those moments, it is bliss. We came out a hair full of salt and grinning ear to ear.

Penzance Jubilee Pool

From raw waves to controlled wildness, the next stop with Rachel was the Jubilee Pool in Penzance. It’s one of the most iconic sea pools in the UK, and what makes it unique is the geothermal pool tucked alongside the traditional seawater one. I loved going between the two — first plunging into the cold sea water that makes your breath catch, then melting into the warmth of the geothermal pool before heading back to the cold.... It was the perfect balance of invigorating and indulgent, and I left feeling completely refreshed.

Swimming with Horses near St Michael’s Mount

Perhaps the most surreal swim of the summer was at Cornwall Sea Horses, in the sea overlooking St Michael’s Mount. Swimming with horses isn’t something I’d ever imagined doing, but since finding out about it nearly a year ago I'd been desperate to try it - and it didn't disappoint - it was magical. The horses moved powerfully through the water, calm and sure-footed, while we floated on top. All the while St Michael’s Mount rose in the background, giving the whole experience a fairytale feel. It’s not every day you share the sea with such magnificent animals — that one will stay with me forever - I've written more about it separately as there was so much contained within the whole experience.

Tintagel & Merlin’s Cave

One of my most spontaneous swims was at Tintagel. After exploring the castle and soaking up its legends, we wandered down and spotted swimmers near Merlin’s Cave. We hadn’t brought swimwear, but the temptation was too strong to resist. After a moment’s hesitation, we stripped down to our underwear and waded in. The water was cool, clear, and full of atmosphere with the caves all around us and the castle ruins above — it felt like stepping right into one of the Arthurian myths that cling to the place. Sometimes the unplanned swims end up being the most memorable, and this one definitely was.

Harlech Beach

Later in the summer when in Wales I took Grace to Harlech Beach. The sand stretched endlessly, soft underfoot, while the sea shimmered in the sunlight. Grace ended up not being sk keen once we were at the waters edge, she isn't keen on cold water! I had a quick swim whilst keeping an eye on her and then headed back to get changed.

Campsite River Dip

In Wales we were camped next to the river, it was beautiful to wake up to each morning. Sadly it wasn’t deep — in fact, it was really too shallow for a proper swim — but I couldn’t resist trying to get in. I managed to immerse myself a couple of times, even if I couldn’t move around much. It was a reminder that sometimes it’s not about distance or depth, but simply about connecting with the water wherever you are. Even a quick cold dip in a shallow river can work wonders!

Bigbury with the Whoop Whoop Chill Gang

Then came a joyful meet-up with the Whoop Whoop Chill gang at Bigbury. There’s something special when swimming with this group, we've all been through alot. There's lots of chatter as we get ready, the shared squeals when we plunge into cold water, and the warmth of community afterwards. The swim itself was lovely, but it was the energy of being together that made it stand out. Bigbury is our home swim place, where we all met and gained our confidence with the sea and cold water. Lots of wide open sea and space to play, and we always take full advantage. It's such a beautiful setting with Burgh Island and I love watching the sea tractor taking people across!

Blackpool Sands – An Anniversary Swim

Finally, one of the most meaningful swims of the summer: Blackpool Sands, to mark the one-year anniversary of the Chill Into the Blue course. The course is for people recovering from or living with cancer. To celebrate a year on felt incredibly special.

For me, Blackpool Sands carries its own nostalgia too. In my twenties, Sundays often meant heading there with friends, usually a little worse for wear after Saturday nights out. It was our place to recharge, lie on the sand, and stumble into the sea!

The day was perfect — calm sea, gentle waves, and even butterflies drifting over the water as we swam - I remember seeing butterflies as I swam when I first started the course, so it was magical to see them again for the anniversary swim. After, we toasted with bubbly on the beach qnd headed into the sauna. I loved running back into the sea then back to the sauna, body tingling with that contrast of hot and cold. Surrounded by the gang, celebrating together, it was a day full of gratitude, joy, and friendship ❤️

Looking Back

Each swim had its own uniqueness — wild, serene, shallow, celebratory — but together they’ve created a tapestry of memories I’ll hold close, for the places and the people I did them with. From washing-machine waves to horses in the sea, castle caves to anniversary celebrations, these summer swims have reminded me yet again why I love swimming so much: it’s all about the adventure, connection, and joy.

27th June - Walkham, Dartmoor

We didn’t quite end up where we intended…. However we did find a herd of beautiful ponies before finding a spot of water to have our picnic and test out my kayak for the first time! Of course I got in the water too!

30th June - Tiverton Canal

So this isn't exactly a swim (thank goodness) but as it's a water based activity I've decided to include it!

I convinced my friend Naomi to have a go in my kayak on the canal. Turns out her dad was a canoe instructor so she had some great tips! I was slightly nervous about falling in the canal water, it's unlike me to be shy of getting in but as if to reinforce this there was a rather stinky decomposing fly riddled fish near to where we had to get in and out….!

I had to choose the area we went carefully due to alot of over protective swans being around at the moment, we managed to avoid seeing any but did get hissed at by a well camouflaged moorhen!

It was a great attempt at my first proper kayak session…. now to do it again and maybe with Grace on board!

3rd July - Saunton Sands

Next was Saunton Sands for splashes and giggles with Lucy! After a day in London a trip to the beach was much needed to wash the city away! We had so much fun jumping around in the waves!

Driving home I had to stop to admire the most spectacular sunset.

10th July - The Orchard, River Exe, Tiverton

A few days ago I managed a dip in the River Exe, catching up with a friend who I'd not seen for way too long. We had a little swim up river as we nattered away. We just about avoided the swans with their 5 signets - I did not fancy being chased by them!

It was another beautiful evening, we sat under the tree continuing to catch up on about 6 months worth of gossip as the sun set behind us.

13th July - Babbacombe

I have so many incredible childhood memories of this area from when we holidayed with my grandparents who lived here. It's crazy to see the cliffs I used to charge down to the beach from are now all eroded away.

Today we used the less strenuous option and took the Babbacombe Cliff Railway.

Last time I was here was to celebrate Grace's 1st birthday in 2018. A beautiful memory of my gorgeous grandmother celebrating with us. We miss her and my granddad so much and I know they'd be smiling looking down on us splashing about in the see, 3 of their great grandchildren together ❤️

There were alot of screams about jellyfish but on observation they seemed to be screams about their existence and no one was actually being stung, the seaweed was more problematic to swim through though!

I promised Grace a Mummy/Grace day today and that we'd go to Dartmoor. I thought a river would be fun, Grace could splash about and I could have a swim - I love it when a plan comes together!

I was trying to work out where to go that would have all we wanted. Spitchwick was on my mind, but I was worried about it being too busy and if I'd be able to park. I looked at other options and most were a longer drive and/or too far to walk for me. In the end I thought let's give Spitchwick a try. I've not been there for years!

I managed to park and it was perfect.

We settled in one spot but it wasn't deep, I was sure it got deeper further along and so we went to investigate, my memory was correct.

We set up camp for the morning and I got in as Grace watched from the bank.

It was cold. I found getting in the sea pretty easy recently, so was taken by surprise at my resistance 🤣 I splashed myself and slowly acclimatised before gently immersing myself fully - it felt so good. The cold took all the pain away. I found a great spot where I could swim against the current, it was at exactly the right strength that I just swam on the spot, like a swimming treadmill!

I love Dartmoor, I always say my soul sings when I'm there. I took in my surroundings, trees, bluebells, blossom, Grace looking on.

I got out and Grace paddled for a while. We were there a couple of hours and in that time a few people came and went. A group of young lads egging each other on to get in, they went up to their knees then thought better of it, but later managed a dip. A mum who'd been standing in the water debating it bravely went all in so as not to be shown up by her young son who jumped in with no hesitation! A couple of women who took the plunge, and then became heroines as they rescued an expensive shoe that had dropped in the river! A few dogs had a good cool down. A girl who was swimming under water and in for ages as if she were in the Bahamas.

We loved people watching, and chatting as people came and went.

I love how the water calls to everyone.

We drove the long way home, stopping at Dartmeet for a play, and found some Highland cows and a mare with a very new gorgeous foal.

After more delicious food for lunch: homemade soup and bread with some cheese (even the butter is homemade) it was time to see Raven and give her a brush. She has some great long wiry hair and a teeny moustache!

Raven and Ava were then loaded onto the trailer and we drove to the bottom of the mountain (or very large hill..)!

We tacked up and started along the path which really did get wild at times with some steep inclines and declines. A cuckoo flew by, the first time I've actually seen one. A buzzard was hovering and I noticed another bird of prey but I'm not sure what it was. They had spotted Golden Eagles over the farm in the morning, I'm so hoping I'll get to see them before it's time to go home.

There's lots of the stunning yellow bright gorse and more of the lovely wild blueberry shoots coming through, when I looked carefully I could see the red berries ready to start to ripen. I wonder how long they last and whether the birds scoff them all just before they hit ripeness, like they do with our cherries in the garden!

You need to know where you're going on this ride, there's alot of peat bogs. Cara pointed out the cotton and bog plants that show where it's at its worst - images of Artex drowning in the Swamp of Sadness came to mind.

Despite the terrain Raven was not only foot perfect but also a really smooth ride!! I was amazed at how as we went down some very steep banks I hardly felt her finding her way and didn't move in the saddle.

Bluebells scattered alongside our path and Skylarks swooped and sung.

As we reached the top a majestic sight as Loch Orodale came into view. I'd brought my swim gear with me...

We dismounted and let the horses have a break. Untacked and left with a headcollar and rope, they don't run off. Good horses!

After a very short "will I won't I" I got changed and, not exactly dove in the water, but tentatively and very inelegantly scrambled down the rocks, apologising to the tadpoles as I went and got in. It was wonderful.

There were a few deep breaths but actually it wasn't that cold. The water had a yellow tinge due to the peat underneath. This peat with a bit of sun can make it warm up, I'm not saying it was warm though...

I didn't stay in too long, well aware I had no towel and did not want to be shivering all the way back home. Thankfully the sun was shining with a gentle breeze and I was soon dry and not once felt cold when out - I must be doing a good job of growing the yellow fat cold water helps you retain!

It really was blissful, looking around at the hills, the horses grazing peacefully by the water and Cara shouting "rather you than me"! How will I ever top riding to a Loch, letting the horses loose, swimming then warming up in the sun with a cup of tea in great company!!

Eventually it was time to tack up, get back on board and make our descent.

What a ride.

Grace came with us too and we set up camp with our chairs and picnic blanket. Grace had her bucket and spade and built a castle, then a fairy ring. She then did some fractions on the sand - she drew sixths, quarters, halves etc and wanted me to do sums with her!

We went shell hunting and to my surprise I spotted a rabbit, that was unexpected on the sand, Grace missed it and we didn't see it again so I've started wondering if it was some kind of Alice in Wonderland hallucination!

As we wobbled about the rocks Grace found herself a large stick and called it sticky. When I suggested she leave it behind she exclaimed no way and that sticky was her new friend - perhaps this is the problem of an only child, they end up making friends with sticks in desperation! I agreed sticky could come home with us and he's currently living in the garage, thankfully he's very low maintenance.

We rejoined my friends watching the surfers enjoying the waves and I decided it was time to join them, thankfully they were small gentle waves so they didn't hinder my want to get in.

Grace approached the sea with me. We raced each other to the edge, we hit the water, I smiled, she screamed. Apparently it was cold, I carried on whilst she watched from the shoreline with my friend, and took to cartwheeling and handstanding instead.

It turned into one of my favourite swims, and is a beach I hope to frequent more often through the summer months.

I lay on my back looking up to the sky. The moon was up, and the sun setting. White horses gathered in the waves, I watched as they approached, standing for the ones coming in a little higher so as not to drown myself!

I watched the surfers, bobbing about waiting for "the" wave to come... patience is certainly needed. I think I might like a paddleboard one day.

A break in the waves and calm resumes, the sea is sparkling again. Floating I allow the tide to pull me in, then push me back, feeling into the gravitational pull of the moon - an urge to swim on a full moon fills me.

Looking back towards the golden sand of the beach I watch Grace joyfully cartwheeling and throwing herself around.

Sadly it's time to get out. I feel I could stay here forever, if Ariel can grow legs and walk on land, maybe I can grow a tail and stay in the sea, the love that guides me being the love of the ocean, nothing more.

As I find my way to the shore I see Grace has entered the water again. She's waving, smiling then shouting "I'm stuck". She's beached herself on a rock as the water reached her knees. We laugh as I take her hand and help her back to the beach.

Gratitude fills my heart for love. Love of the sea, love of my daughter and love of my friends who are beside me.

We decided to visit Exmouth on Sunday and I took my swim things with me just in case I felt brave enough.

I'm always extra cautious when swimming in water I don't know, and so asked my local outdoor swim group about the best spot to swim at Exmouth, I know there are sandbanks and currents there so you have to be careful. Near the RNLI Lifeboat Station was suggested as the best spot, and I was delighted to see it's where the lifeguards are and they have flags to swim between - I felt very safe and so of course dove in!

I was really surprised at how not cold (but not warm!) the water felt to me, I think I've really adjusted a bit to this cold water malarkey.

Exmouth is a beach that has sewage issues. Jo Bateman swims regularly there and is attempting to take South West Water to court over it.

I checked the Surfers Against Sewage app before getting in to ensure there were no current sewage warnings, as ever my infection risk concern was on my mind.

My friends sat on the beach watching, suggesting I was mad, as I floated and splashed around for a while. I had to force myself out, I felt like I could carry on for hours.

Having got dressed I realised I was warm already, I could have stayed in longer.... maybe....

I've been following the local swimmers Facebook group and WhatsApp chats for over a year, lurking with every intention of joining but never quite doing so ..... too many excuses in my head, the main one: how clean is the water? Always concerned about my infection risk for obvious reasons.

I'd been in touch with an experienced outdoor swimmer whose a member of the group previously, asking about the safety and cleanliness and even arranging to meet up, but cancelling due to low neutrophils and feeling run down, and then never rearranging though I was constantly looking at meets and wanting to join.

I loved my swim at Teignmouth a few weeks ago, I've been missing regular cold water swimming and it seems silly not to make the most of what's on my doorstep. So finally I did it.

I arranged to meet with two lovely ladies who were planning a dip Sunday morning. I'm so happy I jumped in eventually. It was beautiful.

I clambered in from the bank, thankfully a shallow starting point that slowly descends.

My breath caught as I first immersed myself in the 11 degrees water.

We swam a short distance enjoying (yes enjoying) the cold embrace of the water, taking away everything else. It was possible to stand in the centre of the river which was reassuring. I find it a bit nerve wracking when entering water I don't know, but the river is at its best when it's been dry and the sun is out! No rushing water here and most importantly I was with people who did know this river.

The sun was shining, a egret sat further upstream. Down stream a swan emerged, wary that they can be territorial especially this time of year we kept eyes on him!

It was a quick swim, they say when you feel acclimatised that's a sure sign you need to be getting out, so as much as I wanted to stay in I swam back to the bank and climbed out.

The swim spot is found at the Community Orchard, a small piece of land near Morrisons and some industrial units, where a variety of apple trees have been planted and benches placed. Opened three years ago, the community space has blossomed into a beautiful gathering place where the community can come together and it was wonderful to finally see it and make use of it. Much gratitude to those that put all the work in to make it want it is, and manage the ongoing upkeep.

There are some days when it feels like the universe is working in alignment with you, my Disney Paris trip very much felt like that, and Sundays swim was definitely met with a universe that was cheering us on!

It's been a while since I managed a dip, I've missed it and was very excited to be meeting up with my Into The Blue buddies at Teignmouth. I've been struggling to get to Bigbury-on-Sea to meet up, I can't manage the drive, it's so exhausting. The times I've done it have resulted in me really pushing myself and ending up in bed with a migraine for a few days 🤦‍♀️. Kind of defeats the point of the swim if that's the end result! So the amazing Whoop Whoopers, as we call ourselves, arranged to meet me at Teignmouth so I didn't have to drive quite so far!

None of us had ever swum at Teignmouth so we weren't quite sure what to expect. I had heard of other groups that met there, so I thought it would be a good spot to try.

We'd also discovered the Devon Community Sauna would be set up beach side, so we of course treated ourselves to a session to warm us up after the swim!

We aren't very experienced swimmers, so when on our arrival all we saw were crashing brown waves we had a few doubts! It's hard when you don't know how the land lays under the sea, some places like Weymouth you can walk out for a long way before the water starts to get deep, other beaches there will be sudden drop offs and we definitely did not want a sudden drop off in the waves we were watching!

A couple of our group spotted some people who looked like swimmers and asked to get a local’s opinion. As luck would have it one was a lifeguard and the other an experienced swimmer, they advised us to go to a place further up where the estuary flowed. It would be calmer but we'd have to be careful not to get caught in the rip current!

All 5 of us piled into the car and headed to the other end of the beach to suss it out. Two went for a recce of the area, the rest of us waited in anticipation...

Would you believe not only were we good to go but a beautiful lady called Wren had been down there for a swimming group she assists with and offered to act as lifeguard for us! She was an experienced swimmer and runs groups for Healthscape, they'd just finished their own swim. She advised us the area to stay in to keep safe. Another lovely lady arrived too who'd missed the earlier group and joined us for our swim, joining in our whoop whoops too, she was a welcome addition!

The water was glorious, and what a spectacular spot!! It was a little cold, but after a bit of ohhing, whooping and splashing I immersed myself fully and it felt blissful. I floated smiling, filled with joy as the sun shone down on us making the water sparkle.

I wanted to stay in longer, but generally the rule in cold water is once you're feeling acclimatised it's best to get out. Begrudgingly I dragged myself out of the water.

We learned a bit more about the Healthscape Wellbeing Community from Wren. Healthscape provide social support and opportunities to enhance people’s mental health & wellbeing in the local community. Their team aim to offer a variety of experiences using natural surroundings on and around the coast. It sounds like an amazing project! I'm hoping to join them in Teignmouth some time.

Once we'd wrapped up we headed to the Devon Community Sauna which was situated on the sea front. Designed within a horse trailer it was a truly authentic sauna experience, and a great way to warm up (though slowly so as not to get to hot too quickly after the cold dip and faint). We wore our fabulous sauna hats and had some wonderful belly laughs along the way.

We had to finish off with some food and headed to the Venus Cafe, the same cafe we visit at Bigbury-on-Sea who always have delicious refreshments and they didn't disappoint.

I love these swims and catching up with my Into the Blue group makes them all the more special.

Into the Blue is a cold water swimming course for those who have or had cancer. It's one of the best things I've ever done, I loved it (see my Swim Diaries) Ellie who runs the course just incredible, a very special woman indeed - have a read and you will see for yourself!

I've not been able to get to the sea for a swim for a month or so now, it's one of the things I really miss when I can't do it regularly. It's amazing the effect it has on my mood and physical pain. Hopefully I'll be back into the blue before too long!
